Zohran Mamdani wins NYC mayoral race, becoming the city’s first Muslim mayor

Democrat Zohran Mamdani, aged 34, has been elected the 111th mayor of New York City, defeating former governor Andrew Cuomo and Republican Curtis Sliwa in a historic victory. Mamdani, a Queens-based state assembly member and self-described democratic socialist, will become the city’s first Muslim mayor and the youngest in more than a century. His campaign focused on affordability, transit and housing reform.
