UK rejects mass prostate cancer screening program
Widespread prostate cancer screening will not be implemented, the UK National Screening Committee has announced. The decision follows worries that PSA tests present accuracy issues and could lead to overdiagnosis. Unnecessary treatments may result in side effects, including erectile dysfunction, they added. Targeted screening will be available for men aged 45 to 61 who carry BRCA mutations. Sir Chris Hoy and David Cameron have voiced their disapproval. Charities are awaiting the Transform trial results, which uses PSA tests alongside MRI scans.
