Scientists Discover Why Type 1 Diabetes Is More Aggressive in Young Children
Researchers at the University of Exeter have revealed why type 1 diabetes is more severe when diagnosed before age seven. Their study found that insulin-producing cells in young children exist as small, immature clusters that are easily destroyed by the autoimmune attack, while older children and adults have mature cell groups that are more resistant. The discovery could lead to new immunotherapy treatments that delay the disease onset by allowing the pancreatic cells time to develop properly.
