Treasury Stops 5% Public EV Charging Tax Cut
Drivers without home chargers will keep paying higher rates when topping up electric cars away from home. Rachel Reeves's Treasury turned down a Department for Transport request in May 2026 to match the 5% VAT charged on domestic electricity. Heidi Alexander's department had asked chargepoint companies to support the plan, while HMRC is contesting a tribunal decision on public charging taxes.
