Shabana Mahmood makes UK refugee status temporary for 30 months
Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood is implementing changes to UK asylum rules, making refugee status temporary from Monday. Refugees will now receive temporary protection for 30 months, with their cases reviewed for a potential return if their home countries are deemed safe. This new policy, which takes effect without a parliamentary vote, aims to make the UK less attractive for illegal migrants. The government will also double to 10 years the wait time for some foreign nationals to settle.
