Scottish Teachers Face Job Shortages, Many Seek Work Abroad

Many teachers in Scotland are struggling to find permanent positions, leading some to spend years on supply lists or seek employment abroad. Government figures indicate that newly qualified teachers, particularly in primary schools, are not securing permanent jobs despite reported school pressures. Louise Fraser, a 24-year-old teacher from Ayrshire, moved to Dubai for job security after graduating in 2022. Another teacher has been on a supply list for nine and a half years. Education Secretary Jenny Gilruth acknowledged that pay rises have increased employment costs.
