Japan fires first missile in Philippines, signaling new regional role

Regional security ties are tightening as joint drills grow more active. Japan’s Self-Defense Forces launched Type 88 anti-ship missiles during Balikatan exercises in the Philippines on Wednesday, marking their first such firing there alongside U.S. and allied forces. Around 1,400 personnel, plus warships, aircraft and missile systems, were deployed as part of the expanded role.
