Pound gains as firms expect slower price rises

Lower worries about future price increases could ease pressure on household finances, and potentially lead to less pressure for future interest rate hikes, if nominal interest rates stay unchanged. On Friday, sterling moved higher against the dollar, helped by steadier oil prices and a Bank of England survey showing firms expect slower rises in prices over the next year. Markets see a first rate increase around September, while UK house prices slipped 0.1% in May.
