Lords find no asylum seeker slavery abuse evidence
A House of Lords committee concluded that previous Conservative government claims about widespread abuse of modern slavery protections by asylum seekers were unsubstantiated and harmful to vulnerable victims. The cross-party Modern Slavery Act 2015 Committee report, published in October 2024, found that tougher immigration measures weakened victim support without evidence of system misuse. The committee criticized unsubstantiated claims that justified reducing protections, stating such accusations harmed the most vulnerable and should never be made without hard evidence.
