Dublin MetroLink spends €80M on O'Connell Street land, sparking questions

Ireland's transport developer TII bought a key site on O'Connell Street in Dublin from Hammerson for about €80 million for the MetroLink railway. The acquisition covers more than 2.5 acres, encompassing the former Carlton cinema site, which is earmarked for an underground station. While TII says this avoids a compulsory purchase, critics question whether such a large and expensive site was truly necessary, as there were no existing legal blocks to building the station there.
