UK to tax sugary milk drinks from 2028
Health Secretary Wes Streeting announced Tuesday that the UK government will end the exemption for milk-based drinks from the soft drinks industry levy, bringing pre-packaged milkshakes, lattes and flavoured milk under the sugar tax from January 2028. The threshold will also be reduced to 4.5g sugar per 100ml, with the policy aimed at tackling childhood obesity and expected to raise between £40 million and £45 million annually for public finances.
