5.9-magnitude earthquake strikes Afghanistan’s Hindu Kush region
A magnitude 5.9 earthquake hit Afghanistan’s mountainous Hindu Kush region, according to the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ). The earthquake occurred at a substantial depth, a factor typically mitigating surface damage; however, casualties of eight dead and one injured were reported shortly thereafter. Afghanistan is highly prone to earthquakes due to its location along active tectonic boundaries, with the Hindu Kush region frequently experiencing seismic activity.
