A former CIA officer has pleaded guilty to wire fraud after prosecutors said he invented secret programmes to buy Florida homes and hundreds of gold bars worth more than $40m. David J. Rush, 49, cost the US government about $194m, the Justice Department says. Investigators seized roughly 300 gold bars from his Virginia home. He faces up to 20 years when sentenced on 28 January.
