Peach fuzz itch explained by new nerve cell discovery

A biological pathway in mice, which clarifies why particular fine hairs cause an itch, has been identified by scientists working at the University of Michigan. The recently discovered network of vellus-like hairs and touch-sensitive nerve cells seems to form a specialised system for detecting "mechanical itch." The research, which appeared in the journal Neuron on July 14, 2026, provides fresh understanding and may result in improved therapies for long-term itching conditions such as eczema.
