Iran closes Hormuz, striking US embassy as Mideast air travel halts.

Iran's Revolutionary Guard announced the closure of the Strait of Hormuz on 3 March 2026, striking energy infrastructure across the Gulf as the combined death toll in Iran and Lebanon surpassed 600 people. Two Iranian drones struck the US Embassy in Riyadh, causing a limited fire and minor damage. President Trump said the military campaign was projected to last four to five weeks but had the capability to run far longer. Air travel across the Middle East had virtually ground to a halt, with Qatar Airways and other major carriers grounding flights.
