Mexico opens World Cup with Shakira, 200 protest, 2-0 win.
The 2026 World Cup began in Mexico City with a colourful opening ceremony and Mexico's first home game in 40 years. Global music star Shakira performed at the Azteca stadium on Thursday, but outside, police clashed with around 200 radical protesters. Mexico won their opening match 2-0 against South Africa, while other groups protested Mexico's drug war.
