Why is the grid so old?

Much of the UK's electricity grid was built decades ago for a different energy landscape, primarily relying on large, centralised fossil fuel power stations. It wasn't designed for the current influx of decentralised renewable energy sources, which require a more flexible and robust network to integrate effectively.
