Why is Gaza blockaded?

The Gaza Strip has been under an Israeli and Egyptian blockade since 2007, following Hamas's takeover of the territory. Israel states the blockade is necessary for security reasons, to prevent Hamas from acquiring weapons and materials that could be used for attacks. Egypt maintains its part of the blockade to control its border and prevent militant activity.
