Why is altitude a challenge?

Playing football at high altitude, like in Mexico City which is over 2,200 metres above sea level, means there's less oxygen in the air. This makes it much harder for players to breathe and can lead to fatigue more quickly. Teams often need extra time to acclimatise, but England might not have had that luxury, adding another layer of difficulty to their World Cup match.
