Why does Bangkok flood often?

Bangkok is particularly vulnerable to flooding due to its low elevation, much of it only a metre or two above sea level, and its location on the Chao Phraya River delta. Combined with heavy monsoon rains, like the recent deluge, and an extensive network of canals and drainage systems that can become overwhelmed, the city frequently faces significant inundation challenges.
