Why do volcanoes erupt?

Volcanoes erupt when molten rock, ash, and gases escape from beneath the Earth's surface. Mount Sinabung's eruption, sending ash 3,500 metres high, is a powerful example of this natural process. Pressure builds up from within, eventually forcing material upwards through vents and cracks in the Earth's crust, leading to these dramatic events.
