What are exclusion zones?

Exclusion zones are designated areas from which people are restricted for safety reasons, often due to natural hazards. Following Mount Sinabung's eruption, Indonesian authorities established a three-kilometre exclusion zone around the summit, with a larger area to the south-southeast. These zones are vital for protecting lives by keeping people away from immediate dangers like falling ash, lava flows, and toxic gases.
