Why do grass fires spread so fast?

Grass fires, like the one in Stourbridge, can spread incredibly quickly because dry grass acts like kindling. The flames jump easily from one patch to another, especially with wind, making them very hard to contain. This rapid spread is why so many firefighters were needed to tackle the 40-acre blaze and protect homes.
