Why clear land with fire?

The Indonesian forestry minister stated that many fires were deliberately set for agriculture. This method, often called 'slash and burn', is a cheap and quick way to clear large areas of land, particularly for palm oil plantations and other cash crops. However, it has devastating environmental and health consequences.
