Why can't planes just open the door?
When a plane is at the gate, it needs ground staff to operate the airbridge or steps for passengers to disembark safely. Without these, even if the door is open, it's not safe or permitted for people to get off. This is what happened at Heathrow, leaving passengers stuck on board.
