Why are scrap fires so bad?

Scrap metal fires, especially those involving tyres like the Barnsley blaze, are notoriously difficult to extinguish. Tyres are made of rubber and other chemicals, which burn intensely and produce thick, toxic smoke. The sheer volume and varied materials in a scrap yard also make it hard for firefighters to reach the heart of the fire, prolonging the incident.
