Why are planes so vulnerable?

Fires on aeroplanes are particularly dangerous because of the confined space, the presence of flammable materials, and the limited ability to fight fires in the air. A battery fire in the cargo hold, for example, could be very hard to detect and extinguish, threatening the safety of everyone on board. This is why airlines are so strict.
