Why are crime stats tricky?

Crime statistics can be a bit of a minefield, as they're often influenced by how crimes are reported and recorded. A big jump, like Benidorm's 93.8% rise in muggings, might reflect a genuine increase, but it could also be down to more people reporting incidents or better police recording. It's rarely a simple one-to-one comparison.
