A surge in crime, especially violent incidents like those in Benidorm, can seriously damage a tourist destination's reputation. When holidaymakers feel unsafe, they're less likely to visit, which can hit local businesses and the economy hard. Warnings about fake taxis and crowded police stations certainly don't help.
