Why are cities hotter?

Cities like London often experience higher temperatures than surrounding rural areas due to the 'urban heat island' effect. Buildings and roads absorb and retain more heat than natural landscapes, and less vegetation means less cooling through evaporation. This can make city forecasts, like London's 26C, notably warmer.
