What is solar electric propulsion?

Solar electric propulsion uses sunlight to generate electricity, which then powers an ion engine. This engine expels charged particles at very high speeds, creating a small but continuous thrust. While it's not fast enough for quick trips, it's incredibly efficient over long distances, making it ideal for missions like the Fermi Explorer that will take thousands of years.
