What is shingles?

Shingles is a painful rash caused by the varicella-zoster virus, the same virus that causes chickenpox. After you recover from chickenpox, the virus remains inactive in your nerve tissue and can reactivate years later as shingles. The NHS vaccine aims to prevent this reactivation, especially in older adults where the condition can be more severe.
