What is 'ejecting' from a jet?

Ejecting means the pilots activated an emergency system that rapidly propels their seats and them out of the aircraft, usually with a parachute deploying automatically. It's a last resort to save lives when a plane is uncontrollable or about to crash. The fact both pilots ejected successfully likely saved them from more serious injuries.
