Explained in plain English

What is diminished responsibility?

Diminished responsibility is a partial defence to murder, reducing the charge to manslaughter. It applies when a person's mental functioning was substantially impaired by a recognised medical condition. Yasmeen Ali's acute psychosis meant she was judged not fully responsible for her actions, leading to the manslaughter conviction instead of murder.
