What is an early election?
An early election is when a Prime Minister calls a general election before they are legally required to. This is usually done to capitalise on a perceived advantage, but as Sir John Curtice warns Prime Minister Andy Burnham, it can be a risky move if public opinion shifts unexpectedly.
