What is a transfer deadline?

Football clubs often have specific times by which they need to complete player signings, known as transfer deadlines. In this story, Chelsea set a 5pm BST deadline for bids for Enzo Fernandez. If a club misses this, they can't sign the player until the next transfer window opens, which adds pressure to negotiations.
