What is a substitute in football?

A substitute is a player who comes onto the pitch to replace another player during a match. Teams typically have a limited number of substitutions allowed per game. Enzo Fernandez being a substitute means he wasn't in the starting line-up but was brought on later, giving fans an opportunity to react to his presence.
