What is a power unit?
In Formula 1, a power unit is the entire system that propels the car, not just the engine. It includes the internal combustion engine, turbocharger, and various energy recovery systems. Mercedes' optimisation means they are getting more out of these complex components than McLaren, even though both teams use very similar technology, giving them a performance edge.
