What is 'base load' power?

Nuclear power plants are typically designed to provide 'base load' electricity, meaning they run continuously at a steady output to meet the constant minimum demand on the grid. When a plant like Gravelines has to partially shut down due to jellyfish, other power sources, such as gas or coal plants, might need to ramp up quickly to fill the gap, which can be more expensive or less environmentally friendly.
