Explained in plain English

What is a loan guarantee?

A loan guarantee is when one party, in this case Canada, promises to cover a loan if the borrower, Ukraine, can't repay it. This makes it much easier for Ukraine to secure loans from other lenders, as the risk is reduced. Canada is providing C$450m in loan guarantees to help improve Ukraine's energy supply, showing a commitment to its long-term stability.
