What does 'stage 4' mean?

Cancer staging describes how far cancer has spread. Stage 4, like Jane Short's diagnosis, means the cancer has spread from its original site to other parts of the body, a process called metastasis. In Jane's case, it spread from her bowel to her liver. This stage is the most advanced and generally harder to treat effectively.
