What are the risks in water?

The risk of infection comes from warm freshwater entering the nose, typically during activities like swimming or diving. The amoeba thrives in warm conditions, so lakes and rivers in hotter climates, like Louisiana's Lake Claiborne, can sometimes harbour it. It's important to remember that you cannot get infected from drinking water, only when contaminated water goes up the nose.
