What are non-electrified routes?

Many railway lines in the UK, particularly in rural areas or those with lower passenger numbers, do not have overhead electric cables. Traditionally, these routes rely on diesel trains. The new battery trains mentioned in the story offer a way to decarbonise these lines without the huge cost and disruption of full electrification.
