What are knock-on delays?

Knock-on delays happen when an initial disruption, like the grounding of flights at Heathrow and Gatwick, creates a ripple effect across the entire travel network. Planes and crews get out of position, leading to further delays at other airports and for subsequent flights. This can last for hours, even after the original problem is fixed.
