What are index funds?

The FTSE 100 and 250 are stock market indexes, tracking the performance of the UK's biggest companies. You can invest in an 'index fund' which holds shares in all these companies, giving you a broad slice of the market. This is a popular way to invest for retirement or long-term savings, spreading your risk across many businesses rather than picking individual winners.
