Explained in plain English

What are gilts?

Gilts are essentially IOUs issued by the UK government to borrow money. They are considered very safe investments. The 'yield' is the return investors get. When yields rise, it means the government has to offer higher returns to attract lenders, reflecting increased borrowing costs or investor concerns.
