What are contrails?

Contrails are those white lines aircraft sometimes leave in the sky. They are essentially thin, artificial clouds formed from the hot, humid exhaust of jet engines mixing with cold, moist air at high altitudes. While some dissipate quickly, others can spread and persist, trapping heat in the Earth's atmosphere and contributing to global warming.
