Explained in plain English

How powerful is magnitude 7?

The Richter scale, or more accurately the moment magnitude scale, is logarithmic. This means each whole number increase represents a tenfold increase in the measured amplitude of seismic waves, and about 32 times more energy released. So, a magnitude 7 earthquake is significantly more powerful and destructive than a magnitude 6, causing widespread damage.
