How does lightning form?

Lightning forms when tiny ice crystals and water droplets in storm clouds rub together, creating static electricity. The top of the cloud becomes positively charged, and the bottom negatively charged. When this charge difference gets too big, a massive spark, or lightning bolt, zips between the cloud and the ground, or within the cloud itself. This is why storms like those in Mexico City cause delays.
