How does HMRC reclaim it?
If you're a higher earner and don't opt out by the deadline, HMRC will automatically reclaim the Winter Fuel Payment through the tax system. This means the amount you received will be deducted from your taxable income or adjusted in your tax code, effectively taking the payment back without you needing to do anything further.
